Six Diet Myths That Lead Away From Health and Weight Loss

The breathless pace at which many of us lead life in today's world often leads us to look for the fastest and easiest way to deal with lifestyle-induced ailments like obesity and diabetes. Further, with the mounting pressure of having to look your absolute best, at virtually every hour of the day, larger hoards of unwitting individuals are driven towards these "fad diets," which in turn prompts these self-proclaimed fitness gurus to churn out several more to keep up with the ever-increasing demand.

I was looking up some information on aaaalosing weight quickly when I came across an interesting blog. Here's a quote from it.

» How to Lose Weight Safely

Carrying too much weight can affect a person in many ways other than physical appearance. Being overweight can adversely effect the overall quality of life and  self-esteem; it can directly lead to depression, health risks, and physical incapabilities. Conversely, there are a lot of positives to be experienced in achieving and maintaining an ideal body weight.  No wonder then that a lot of people are searching for a weight loss technique that will trim down those fats and get a super slim head turner body.

The first thing that an over-weight person should do is seek a doctor to recommend the best weight loss regimen. Blindly taking a stab at every fad diet that hits the market can be as detrimental to health as being overweight. Every individual is different, with different needs. So consult a doctor to determine the most appropriate weight loss technique. Having said that, there are four aspect to life that need to change in order to lose weight fast. These are: what to eat, how to eat, behavior and activity level.

Here are some quick tips that can help to achieve weight control:

Firstly: Sustained weight involves getting the mindset right, exercising approptiately and regularly, and in some cases using diet supplements. One thing that is universally true: willpower doesn’t work. Trying to lose weight by sheer force of willpower is almost always doomed to failure. You have to learn to think and act like a thin person so that healthy eating and excercise become a natural part of daily life. Plan your daily routine to include some time for taking excercise. It doesn’t have to be too regimented or forced. Spending even 15 or 30 minutes more a day just going for a brisk walk is a step in the right direction.

Second: Be realistic! You can lose a lot of weight in a short time by following a strict low fat or low carb diet but this shouldn’t be kept up for too long. Your body needs the proper nutrients, vitamins and minerals. Depriving yourself of any of these things for too long will lead to ill health. Hence the need to consult a doctor. Also, don’t think of losing weight as being the end goal; once you’ve lost the weight, you’ll want to keep it off; right? Use weight loss as only as the beginning of a weight control regime or you will find yourself putting the weight back on again just as quickly as you lost it.

Third: Listen as the body speaks. Everyone’s body metabolism reacts differently to different weight loss programs and plans. If you find you have a bad reaction, try substituting one program for another. Tailor your exercise program to your body. The easiest and most effective excercise for one person may be different to that of another person. If you are most comfortable with walking, then walk. Muscles burn more calories than fats so building muscle can be good for weight control as well as looking good.  Learn to listen to what your body tells you; hunger (or lack of it) is one signal; mild cravings for the right types of food can be a signal from the body that it needs some specific mineral or vitamin. Feeling restless is usually a signal that you need to get some excercise. Understanding  your body’s signals becomes easier with practice.

Fourth: Ensure you eat plenty of fibre. A high fibre diet  helps you to feel full for longer and is essential for a healthy digestive system. For instance, whole grain bread helps to move fat through the digestive system faster. Simple sugars can provide a short term energy boost when you need it but be aware that if you consume sugar and don’t use the energy, your body is going to store that energy as fat. Carbohydrates are complex sugars that release energy over a sustained period but the same advice applies; if you don’t use the energy your body will turn it into fat.

Fifth: Keep away from fried foods especially deep-fried as this contains a great deal of fat. Fish and white meat such as chicken or turkey are generally leaner than red meats such as beef. But meat that is fried can contain more fat than red meat. It’s much better to opt for grilled food.

Sixth: Drink lots of water. Not many people realize it but most people wander around in a state if dehydration. Drinking at least six to eight large glasses of water a day helps to keep the body in peak condition. Drinking plenty of water has also been shown to be beneficial to brain functions; we’re actually smarter when we drink enough! Weight loss depends on the body being hydrated in order to flush out bodily wastes. And here’s a top tip for weight control: whenever you feel hungry, drink a glass of water and wait 10 minutes; only eat if you still feel hungry. Sometimes the body can’t distinguish between hunger and thirst, drinking a glass of water may be all that you need at that moment.

Self discipline and consistency are the keys to any weight loss success. Weight control is a life-long process. Healthy eating and regular excercise must become part of your life – for the rest of your life! Some people don’t find that an easy pill to swallow. Some people just look for an easy fix. Unfortuately, there isn’t one, at least not yet. So, if you are overweight and would like to be thinner, the very first thing you should do is sit down and ask yourself this question: -

Which is more important to me? To eat healthily and take regular exercise or to live the life I’ve been living?

In the end, the choice is yours and yours alone.
